A few weeks back I wrote an article about how the prophet Elijah was consumed with fear, and fled for his life. However in time, Elijah found strength in the Lord, and returned to Israel. Also in the New Testament Jesus became stricken with fear, but he didn’t run away as Elijah had done. Instead he sought the Father’s will.
Jesus knew the time of his crucifixion was at hand, and went into the garden of Gethsemane to pray. He took with him Peter, James, and John asking them to pray. He said to the three, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.” (Matthew 26:38 KJV)
In Luke 22:43-44 states that an angel came to comfort him. The fear was so great that he sweat great drops of blood. Still Jesus did not submit to fear, instead he turned to the Father. He prayed, “Abba, Father all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.” (Mark 14:36 KJV)
Afterwards he returned to Peter, James, and John and found they were asleep and had not prayed. He woke them, encouraged them to pray, and once again prayed to the Father. Returning to the disciples, Jesus found they had not prayed, but continued to sleep
At a time when Jesus needed the support of his friends, they offered no comfort at all. In this situation most of us would be very discouraged and give up. Yet in this great time of emotional crisis Jesus did not run away. He sought his Father’s will.
Today we live in time where people use fear and intimidation tactics on those who disagree with them. So many people are afraid to make a stand because they are afraid they will be called morons, stupid, hicks, and so on. The fears of Christ were much greater. Jesus realized he would encounter inhuman hostility and hatred at the cross . Still he didn’t run away.
In times of fear, just remember Christ was victorious because of prayer. We should do the same.
More on the subject of fear is coming soon.
